Full of drama and action while set against a meticulously painted cityscape, this painting depicts several commoners being dragged away by the city guards, arms bound while their loved ones look on with worry. The sweeping scale of the buildings in their downward march from this raised setting into the lower levels of the city in the distance is remarkable, each rugged and age worn brick perfectly rendered by his skilled brush. Shadows cast an eerie uncertainty over the inhabitants, the guards and their captives disapearing into the darkness ahead. The painting is signed lower right in vertical script W. Allen R.A. Edinburgh and remains in outstanding condition. Sir William Allan was born in Edinburgh in 1782 and studied as a young man at the Fine Arts Academy in Edinburgh. He pursued his career in London where he submitted Gypsy Girl with Donkey at the Royal Academy. He travelled extensively in pursuit of fame and fortune, heading to St. Petersburg, into the Russian interior and finally Bulgaria (known then as Tartaria) and Turkey. These destinations became central to the body of his work, as he presented Russian Peasants on their Day of Rest at the Royal Academy in 1809. He was granted acceptance to the Royal Academy in large part thanks to his work Love Letter from a Moorish Woman and in 1838 was elected to be the president of the Royal Scottish Academy. Ultimately in 1841 he was knighted as Sir William Allan as the Scottish painter to Queen Victoria. Further he was a member of the Fine Arts Academies of New York and Philadelphia. He died suddenly while in the middle of his work Battle of Bannockburn while in Edinburgh in 1850. His works are held extensively in museum collections.
